Vermont’s most vibrant art community launches its newest public art project as "Brandon, Thinking Outside the Box."
It all started with the Pigs in 2003 and progressed through bird houses, rocking chairs, palettes, and cats & dogs. Now, the Brandon Artists Guild is stretching the bounds of creativity with “Brandon Thinks Outside the Box.” For this year, 16 local artists have been given large (21” x 21” x 21”) wooden boxes and told to let their imaginations run wild. If past experience is any indication, the results are going to be spectacular.
The area schools are also taking part. Each school has been given a slightly smaller box and already are hard at work. Additionally, each member of the Guild has been given a small, jewelry-box size object and will be transforming these into works of art.
The boxes, large and small, will get their public unveiling on Saturday, May 24th. The large boxes will be placed around the village of Brandon and will remain on view, to surprise and delight passersby, until the evening of October 11th when they will be auctioned off. The smaller boxes will be displayed – and for sale -- throughout the period at the Brandon Artists Guild, 7 Center Street, Brandon.
May 24th is also the date when the community will transform Central Park into “Boxzilla” – a town-wide celebration involving boxes, paint, tape, glitter . . . and boundless energy. Cardboard boxes and all the ingredients will be provided but people can also bring their own additions. The object is to create some sort of “out of the box” transformation. Perhaps a tower. Perhaps a depiction of Champ. Who knows? All we know is that it will be extraordinary FUN! Hours are from 12 to 3. The Brandon Area Teens will be on scene to lend support and sell snacks.
